Born and raised in North Wales, I feel art has always played an important role in my life. Having always had a keen interest in both fashion and graphics, I've never conisdered it as work. After completing my GCSE's a few years ago I wanted to go onto something more challenging. I found A Levels weren't of interest to me anymore, I had my eye on something more exciting. I went on to study a year long Art Foundation Course at Coleg Menai. Spending my time specialising in Fine Art, I found it very rewarding. I gained a lot of knowledge, not only from my own work, but from watching other people and learning from my own mistakes. Only now do I appreciate the amount of work we produced. The intensity of the course was amazing and it’s something that I would do all over again!
I'd discovered new ways of working, ways in which I had never imagined myself working. I enjoyed every minute of it and slowly, I found painting had become apart of me, it was a way of expressing my thoughts and feelings. I realised very quickly that there was more to me than just fashion, and I began to uncover a whole new way of working. I discovered a love for colour and texture and experimenting with large scale paintings was something that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Currently, I'm based on the west coast of Scotland. My painting style has changed considerably over the past few years but there are elements of my college work that still remain. Now, I have a small gallery of my work on show at the Willowburn Hotel, just outside Oban. I feel I am constantly developing as an artist, and with a great love for sea kayaking I find the sea and underwater life to be a great
source of inspiration. Experimenting with different mediums always brings interesting outcomes, my paintings are now based with a mix of enamels and emulsion paints.
I always find myself painting in the early hours of the morning. I find it to be a way of relaxing, and expressing my thoughts. I feel I gain something from every piece, like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I still remember being told at college that there are 24hours in a day, you only need to sleep for 6 of them. I can remember thinking, 'what are they on about?' But, now, I always find time to paint, even if it means waking up at 3 in the morning!
I never work with a subject in mind. The mystery of not knowing how something is going to turn out is always exciting and I use it as a way of putting pressure on myself to get the best out of each painting. Its always interesting to see the overall result as each painting changes so much while its being worked. Different materials mix differently, and the different densities in enamels and emulsions often result in flowing shapes, or crackling effects, depending on the order they are applied.
After finishing college, I didn't see university as a way forward. Still my plans remain; to travel and let the skill I have learnt over the years develop naturally. I truly feel that art is such a strong part of me that I will always paint because I have a need to.
I intend to carry on painting, with a view to selling my work, and am currently planning a year long trip to New Zealand and surrounding islands. Hopefully the inspiration will be endless!
